Edit Browse Dialog

Use the Edit Browse dialog to add and modify browse list fields.

Fields

Displays the name of each field contained in the browse configuration and the attributes set for it. Select a field to modify or click Add Field to add a new field to the Browse configuration.

Add Field

Adds a field to the browse. Type or select properties in the Field Attributes section.

Delete Field

Removes the selected field from the browse.

Field Attributes

Type or modify properties to configure the field.

Title

Enter a name for the field as it will appear in the headings box for the browse. Click images\extdesc_shg.gif to enter a calculation.

Function

Click images\extdesc_shg.gif to select a field from the database. Fields may be combined into functions by using arithmetic operators. Fields available are based on the database selected in the Configure Browse dialog.

Alignment

If the field contents are not numerical, select an alignment for the field. Numerical contents such as current year balances default to a right-alignment.

Sort Order Tag

Select the order in which the browse information sorts. The combinations available are based on the item selected in the Function field.

When used in conjunction with the Search Prefix field, this option can help control the contents that display in the browse. In Working Papers for example, in a Map number column, select the sort order tag ID+MAP NO or ID+TRIM(LEFT(MAP_NO)), and a prefix of M (for Map numbers).

Column width

Type or select the width of the browse column. The default is auto. The minimum width allowed is the width of the title of the field and the maximum is 200 characters. If formatting a memo field, it is best to specify a reasonable length for the field rather than selecting Auto to make the field display properly. In addition, you can use the LEFT function make ensure the contents of the field are not cropped accidentally.

Notes

  • In Form Mode, the width of the columns is set and cannot be changed by dragging the border around. If you are using the TRIM function to modify the display, ensure that column size is set large enough to handle the data to be included in the browse.
  • If Auto is selected and the column is a database field, the field length will be used to determine both the display and buffer widths. If, instead, the column is a calculation field the display width will default to 32 and the buffer width will default to 128.

Use as Cell Input

Inputs the contents of this field into the popup cell when a selection is made from the database. Only one of the fields can be marked to be the cell input.

Modifiable

Allow the contents of this field to be modified in Form Mode.

Note

  • If the CaseView database records saved when document saved option is selected under Document | Settings | Client Options, the browse cannot be modified in Form Mode.
  • If the Document owns CaseView database records option is selected under Document | Settings | Client Options, the modifications made in Form Mode will only affect database records that contain a matching document ownership code as well as a matching group/form/ID. When disabled, the modification will only affect independent group/form/ID values. More information about document ownership can be found here.

Check Box Field

Formats the contents of this field as check boxes so that the user can select or clear check boxes to activate cell attributes. This option can be used with yes/no database fields.

Total Column

Displays a total for this field at the bottom of the browse window when the browse is launched through the Launch CaseWare browse event.

Note: The column selected must contain numeric balances.

Show Memo Inline

Prints the extended description of any memo field in the line of the browse (rather than showing as a box with a plus or minus sign that must be selected to display the description). This feature is enabled for memo fields only.

Hierarchy Field

Displays a tree structure to the left of the listed items. This option is used in conjunction with Mask and can be enabled only on the first column of the browse.

Mask

Shows the structure of the value in the field. Click between the X’s to show the structure.

Map numbers have a structure of three digits, a decimal, three digits, a decimal, and two digits.

In Working Papers and Time the Mask is defined as XXX.XXX.XX. In the browse if you click between the X’s the mask can be defined as XXX|XXX|XX|XXXX.

Selecting the Hierarchy Field option and defining a Mask will build a tree structure.

Search Prefix field

Enter a default character or characters to use in the browse to click to enter a calculation.

For example, in Working Papers all map numbers begin with an "M". Rather than requiring the "M" and the map number be entered into the browse each time, you can assign the "M" as the Search Prefix and require only the account number to be input.

See Creating a browse for more details.

Preview

The Preview window displays the browse as it will appear in CaseView given the options selected in the Field Attributes area. Check this window to ensure that the popup browse displays the required information in the best format.

Notes

  • To rearrange the order of fields in your browse quickly, you can highlight the line in the fields box and drag-and-drop it to a new position above or below other lines.
  • You can only edit a browse when connected to a database.
