Creating a Table of Contents Marker

  1. Position the insertion point on the line you want to include in the table of contents.
  2. On the Home tab, click Paragraph, and then click TOC Marker.

  3. Select the Table of Contents Marker option.
  4. Under Table of Contents Marker, do one of the following:
    • To duplicate the text on the marked line in the Table of Contents, select the Use paragraph contents in the Table of Contents option.
    • To use alternative text, clear the Use paragraphs contents in the Table of Contents option, and enter a description of the table of contents entry as you want it to appear in the table of contents.
  5. To reference the page number on which the marker appears, select the Show Page Number option.
  6. To display the entry in the table of contents even if the line on which the marker appears is skipping, in the Action list, select the Never skips option.
  7. Select the Show in Main Table of Contents option.
  8. Select the level of formatting you want to apply to the entry. Formatting attributes are specified when inserting the table of contents.
  9. Click OK.

A green chevron in the style area denotes a table of contents marker.

Note: Any table of contents entries you create automatically appear in the table of contents.
