Creating a Pie Graph

Use graphs to analyze financial trends in a corporation visually. Accounts linked directly from the accounting database in Working Papers or Time easily transform into a graphical presentation.

In a pie graph, each cell value is a data point, which displays as a pie slice. A unique color and label is assigned to each slice. A data series refers to a group of data points. It is only possible to plot one data series in a pie graph. Set prominent data points apart from other pie slices and group minor data points into one slice by using the Slice Exploding and Grouping features. Alternately, specifying the data points to plot can exclude data points entirely.

Any negative data points display as zero in a pie graph. Click the Preview tab to view the graph as it appears in your document.

Step by step instructions

  1. Place the cursor where you wish to insert the graph. On the Insert menu, select Graph. Select Pie and click OK.
  2. Click General. In quotes, enter the Title and sub-title (if any) for the graph. Use the pull-down menus and check boxes to select fonts and formatting for the titles.
  3. Click Data.
  4. In your CaseView document, hold down the ALT key and drag the mouse to select the series of cells for your graph. Click in the Graph Properties dialog. These cells are now highlighted in the "Cells Available" list.

Click in the first cell under the data series column you wish to add these cells to, and click the arrow key to move the cells listed in the cells available list into the data series.

NoteThough you can add more than one data series to a pie chart, only one data series can be displayed at any one time.

  5. Click Pie Options. If desired, select a Graph Width and Height. Under Data Series, select the data series to use for the Pie chart (if there is more than one in the Data tab).
  6. Under Representation, select the appearance of numeric values on the pie (percentage or numeric values).
  7. Set any formatting you wish for the pie chart using the pull-down menus. Click the Preview tab to preview the effect on the pie chart.
  8. Under Slice Customization, select Choose Slices to Explode to emphasize selected data points or select Choose Data Points to Pie to plot selected points from the data series.
  9. If applicable, select an option under Slice Grouping to group data points less than the percentage specified on a pie slice labeled Other.
  10. Select any other options and then click the Preview tab to view the chart as it will appear in the document.
  11. Make any modifications to the appearance of the chart and then click OK.
