About XBRL and Context

Once the taxonomy files have been associated with the client file, but before applying tags to the CaseView document, create a series of "contexts" for the data being tagged. A "context" is just additional information that adds value and context to the XBRL tag. It includes further details on the information being tagged such as:

  • Date sequence, such as yearly, quarterly, monthly etc., and/or any specific period within any date sequence.
  • Type of information (actual, budget, performance measure, etc.)
  • Entity information.
  • Whether the information being tagged is monetary or non-monetary.
  • Currency type (for monetary information).
  • CaseView also supports Dimensions for contexts. These allow you to follow a standardized tagging process for previously indefinable classifications. Examples of this could include tags specific to branch office regions, or to different product lines.

To define Dimensions for contexts, right-click on a label in the XBRL Document Tagging dialog. Select New Dimensional Context which will launch the Edit Dimensions dialog.

Note: CaseView automatically creates some contexts based on commonly used values, such as current year and prior year data, but these need to be edited to provide currency and country information. In addition, it is necessary to create contexts that cover any additional scenarios in the CaseView document.
