Add a watermark

Add a watermark to the background of a document to provide additional information, such as the document's purpose (for example, "Draft copy") or instructions (for example, "Do not duplicate").

You can fully customize watermark text, formatting, shade intensity, and the pages where it should display.

To add a watermark:

  1. Ensure you are working in Design Mode.
  2. On the ribbon, click File | Print | Page Setup.
  3. In the Page Setup dialog, in the Scope group, select where in the document you want the watermark to display.

    Option Description
    Current Page The Page Setup options that are selected will display on the current page only.
    This Page Forward The Page Setup options that are selected will display on the current page and all following pages.
    Whole Document The Page Setup options that are selected will display on all pages of the document.
  4. Click Watermark.... The Watermark dialog displays.
  5. In the Watermark field, enter the text to display in quotes (for example "Draft copy"). To use a text function in the watermark, click ... to open the Calculation Editor.

    Note: You can add line breaks to the watermark text by pressing Shift + Enter on your keyboard.

  6. In the Shade intensity field, use the arrows to increment the shade intensity of the watermark text. The higher the value, the darker the text will display.
  7. Customize any other watermark properties as required.

    Option Description
    Text escapement Select an option to specify the printing angle of the watermark text. Select Other if you want to specify a custom angle.
    Position Select an option to specify the placement of the watermark on the page. By default, the text is centered on the page.
    Skip if condition true Select this option if you want to prevent the watermark from printing under specific conditions. Click ... to define the skip condition.
    Print watermark on top of the document Select this option if you want to bring the watermark text forward over the document text. Note that this may obscure the document text.
  8. Click the Font tab to customize the typeface, style, size and formatting of the watermark text. Click OK, then OK again to close the dialogs.

The watermark is added to the document. To view the watermark, on the ribbon, click File | Print | Print Preview.
