Create XBRL context
After you've associated the taxonomy files with your Working Papers file, you can create a series of contexts for the data that you'll tag to the document. Context is additional information that adds value to an XBRL tag, such as:
- The date sequence (yearly, quarterly, monthly etc.), and/or any specific period within a date sequence
- The type of information (actual, budget, performance measure, etc.)
- Entity information
- If available, dimensional information
To create XBRL context:
- On the ribbon, click Tools | XBRL | Global Settings....
- In the XBRL for Financial Statements dialog, select the taxonomy to use and click OK.
- In the XBRL Global Settings dialog, click New Context. You can also create a new context based off an existing one by selecting the existing context from the list, then clicking Copy Context.
-
Complete the options to define the context.
Option Description Name Enter a descriptive name for the context. This name displays in the drop-down list of contexts in the XBRL tagging dialog. Scenario Select a scenario for the context, or select [Custom] to create your own. Period Select the period information to associate with the context. If required, you can select a period date sequence that does not exist in the current file. For contexts that do not require a time period, select Forever.
Applicable Select whether the context applies to the whole period, only the beginning, or only the end of the period.
Scheme Enter the namespace URI that will act as the naming authority for the identifier. Click ... to access the Calculation Editor.
Identifier Enter a valid identifier for the selected scheme. Click ... to access the Calculation Editor.
Segment If applicable, select a segment element to further classify the entity information. If the taxonomy supports it, select [Dimensional] to assign Dimensions to the context. Select [Custom] to create a custom segment element.
Click OK.
The XBRL context is created.
Assign context dimensions
If a given tag is not specific enough to meet the needs of the firm, you can include dimensional information to further classify it. Note that dimensional information is only available if it is supported by your current taxonomy.
To assign context dimensions:
- On the ribbon, click Tools | XBRL | Tags....
- In the XBRL for Financial Statements dialog, select the taxonomy to use and click OK.
- In the document, select an appropriate taggable value, then locate its corresponding tag in the XBRL Document Tagging dialog. Right-click the tag and click New Dimensional Context....
-
In the Edit Dimensions dialog, configure the dimensions to further classify the Scenarios and Segments.
Option Description Role Select the context category to modify. Primary Item Select the element which best represents the intended purpose of the context. The Role and Primary Item fields will populate based on the selections which led to the Edit Dimensions dialog, but may be modified if necessary. Scenario Dimensions Select the appropriate dimension from the list and specify the associated value. You can select multiple dimensions and values. Segment Dimensions Select the appropriate dimension from the list and specify the associated value. You can select multiple dimensions and values. Click OK.
The dimensions are assigned to the context. In the XBRL Contexts dialog, you'll see that [Dimensional] now displays in place of the Scenario or Segment values.
In terms of process, a tag with dimensional information behaves no differently than one without. They simply contain standardized tag information, where previously, these tags would have been manually created by each firm. When viewed in an application which supports dimensional context tagging, the resulting XBRL instance file will contain more levels of classification for previously indefinable values.
Create numeric units
You can create numeric units to specify the type of numeric to use in a CaseView document. After creating a numeric unit, you can apply it to tags in the document.
To create a numeric unit:
- On the ribbon, click Tools | XBRL | Global Settings....
- In the XBRL for Financial Statements dialog, select the taxonomy to use and click OK.
- In the XBRL Global Settings dialog, click the XBRL Numeric Options tab.
- Click New Numeric Unit. You can also create a new numeric unit based off an existing one by selecting the existing numeric unit from the list, then clicking Copy Numeric Unit.
-
Complete the options to define the numeric unit.
Option Description Name Enter a descriptive name for the numeric unit. Scaled Select the a rounding method for the value of tags using the numeric unit. Select [Use Document Default] to use the global document rounding settings. Decimal Precision Specify the level of precision for the numerical unit.
- Infinite Precision: Assumes the value is accurate as it stands (no rounding).
- Automatic: Use the rounding and digit settings of a numeric cell to determine the level of precision.
- -8 to 8 Decimal Places: A positive decimal value means you can trust the value to the selected number of decimal places to the right of the point. A negative decimal precision value means you can not trust the value to the selected number of decimal places to the left of the point.
Flip the sign of numeric value during export Select to flip the sign on all values that are tagged with the selected unit of measure during an export. -
Select a unit of measure for the numeric unit.
Option Description Monetary Select if the data to tag uses currency.
- Show obsolete currencies: Include all available currencies, including obsolete currencies, in the Currency drop-down menu.
- Currency: Select the currency to use.
Other Unit Select if other formats are used to define the unit of measure. Enter the set of names in the Namespace field and its Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) in the Identifier field.
Advanced: Division Select to specify the value as a numerator or denominator in a division equation. Advanced: Multiple Measures Select to specify more than one unit of measure using the Add, Edit, or Delete buttons. Click OK.
The numeric unit is created.
