Known issue - Working Papers cannot open Cloud engagement files

It has been brought to our attention that the latest Microsoft Edge WebView2 patch (121.0.2277.83), released by Microsoft on January 25, 2024, is causing Caseware Working Papers versions 2022 and above to close abruptly. This incident is impacting our users who use Working Papers integrated with Caseware Cloud (i.e. Hybrid Cloud).

We recognize that many of our customers have varying IT policies and as a result, will receive the new patch updates in the coming days. However, Caseware is treating this issue with utmost urgency and have prioritized a quick solution in the interim to minimize impact to our users.

Interim Solution

We have created an installer that performs the following actions:

  • Installs the previous working version of Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime within the Working Papers installation folder

  • Updates the Working Papers' configuration files to use this previous version.

Note: The installer does not remove the latest WebView2 Runtime version, rather adds the previous version to be used solely by Working Papers. Other applications that utilize Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime will not be impacted by this change, and continue using the latest version.

  • Adds the following line "UseEdgeBrowserFixedRuntime=1" to the CV.VER file

To download the installer:

  1. Sign in to MyCaseware.

  2. On the Dashboard, click Support Downloads | Working Papers.

  3. Select Working Papers Webview2 Update and expand the (+) Working Papers Webview2 Update drop-down.

  4. Click Download.

You have downloaded the installer (WPWebview2Update.exe).

To run the installer:

  1. Close all instances of Working Papers and Caseview.

  2. Run the installer (WPWebview2Update.exe) and accept the User Account Control (UAC) prompt.

  3. Accept the Master Product & Services Agreement. Click Next.

  4. Review the installation folder (default C:\Program Files (x86)\Caseware). The installer detects the latest version of Working Papers on the computer. If multiple versions are found, you'll have the option to change to the other version's folder. Click Next.

  5. Wait for the installation to finish.

The installer can also be deployed through Device Management tools. For deployment instructions, see How do I perform a silent installation of the Working Papers Webview2 update?

In the meantime, the Caseware team is also working with Microsoft to develop a solution that permanently rectifies this issue. You can expect more updates soon.

We recognize the challenges this incident can bring, and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. Thank you for your patience. Should you have any questions, you can contact Caseware Support and we'd be happy to assist.
