Microsoft SMB2 Hotfix

Microsoft has acknowledged that the Server Message Block Version 2 (SMB2) protocol may cause stability issues and data corruption in applications such as CaseWare Working Papers (including SmartSync), which require real-time file information on files accessed over a network.

Error messages in Working Papers, such as "Error -310: Not a correct index file" and "Inconsistent Database Indices Detected" may display due to data corruption caused by SMB2. Missing or corrupted SmartSync events can also occur when using SmartSync.

If you are using Working Papers on the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems and you are missing the Microsoft SMB2 hotfix, the following message will display:

A warning message stating that the Microsoft SMB2 hotfix has not been installed on the workstation

Microsoft included the SMB2 hotfix as part of MS16-044: Security update for Windows OLE: April 12, 2016, which shows as an Important update and is available from Windows Update. That means users with Automatic Updating enabled will receive this update automatically.

The update can either be installed via Windows Update, or a separate download can be obtained from the Microsoft Download Center on the security update link.

Note: the SMB2 hotfix previously released by Microsoft as part of KB2618096 is no longer required.
