General Tab - Format Style Dialog
General Options
Displays the existing styles in a hierarchy. That is, it shows graphically the styles that are based on other styles.
Name
Displays the name of the style.
Short Description
Enter an abbreviated description for the style.
Style for Following Paragraph
Select an existing style that you want to apply to the next new paragraph formatted with the modified style, for example, having a Title style be followed by a Body Text style.
Based on
Select an existing style to base the style on. A child style inherits properties from its parent style so that changing a group of related styles can be accomplished by changing the parent. For more information, see About Cascading styles.
Available in Design Mode only
This check box shows only in the Design mode.
Limits the ability to edit the style — and any styles based on the style — to Design Mode. In the Design Mode, the Style Sheet dialog displays all styles associated with the document. In the Form Mode with editing enabled, the dialog displays only those styles that are not set as Design Mode only. The only exception to this is styles that are the parent of an editable style. The style will be displayed but will not be editable.
Automatically update style
If selected, changes made to a style automatically update all instances of the style within the document.
Character Preview, Description and Paragraph preview
Displays what the selected style looks like when applied and describes its properties.
Reset
Select to return the style to its original configuration as defined by its parent style. Reset is disabled for top-level (parent) styles since they have no parent style.
