Rename a file

You can rename existing files from the Working Papers File menu. We strongly suggest that you rename all files using Working Papers rather than renaming the file manually in Windows Explorer.

Rename a local or network file

The following steps apply to non-SmartSync files and SmartSync files stored on a local computer or network.

Prerequisites:

  • If you are renaming a SmartSync parent file using a local sync copy, all other staff must synchronize and delete their sync copies first, otherwise they will be abandoned.
  • You must close any open files before you can rename the file (File | Close).

To rename a local or network file:

  1. On the ribbon, click File | Rename File.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select the file that you want to rename. You cannot rename library files, or files that have been signed out or checked out.
  3. Enter the new file name in the field below. File names can contain up to 100 alphanumeric characters, including spaces and some special characters (excluding \ / : * ? " < > |).
  4. If the file is a duplicate of another file, select Generate a new identifier for this file to ensure that the renamed file is unique from the source.
  5. Click Rename File.

The file is renamed.

Rename a file published to Caseware Cloud

The following steps apply to Working Papers parent files that have been published to Caseware Cloud.

Prerequisites:

To rename a file published to Caseware Cloud:

  1. Download the parent file from Cloud onto your local workstation. If necessary, you can create a local backup before renaming the file.
  2. In Working Papers, click File | Rename File.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select the downloaded file that you want to rename.
  4. Enter the new file name in the field below. File names can contain up to 100 alphanumeric characters, including spaces and some special characters (excluding \ / : * ? " < > |).
  5. If the file is a duplicate of another file, select Generate a new identifier for this file to ensure that the renamed file is unique from the source.
  6. Click Rename File.

The file is renamed. You can now republish the file to Cloud to apply the name change.
