Insert Column command

Use this command to create and configure a table column.

Select the type of each column. The column type controls how CaseView handles data entered in the column. The default selection is General. Once the table is created, there is no way of modifying the type of a column. To do so, you must delete the column and then insert a new column with the specified column type.

When inserting columns containing cells, CaseView numbers the cells automatically based on the table identifier. Therefore, table cells have numbers like SLH.A1 where A1 is column A, row 1 and SLH is the table identifier.

Any existing cells in columns below the new column will be renumbered so that their column attribute increases by 1. For example, if a new column is inserted before column B, cell AB.B1 will be renumbered to AB.C1, AB.C1 will become AB.D1, etc.

Note: Columns cannot be inserted between two existing columns that have merged cells.

If this box is left clear, then the new column will be inserted to the left of the one where the cursor is positioned. To insert the column to its right, select this box.

Select the type of column to insert.

Copy of current column

If selected, the new column contains the cells with the same content as the column where the cursor is positioned. Note: Columns containing merged cells cannot be copied using this method.

General column

Select to insert a general column that accepts data as text only. Calculations will not work if entered straight into general cells.

The contents of general cells inserted in an existing table without CaseView cells cannot be modified in the Form Mode. You would use this type of column for a labels or text boxes within the table that you wanted to set in Design Mode and that you do not want the user to be able to input information into when in Form Mode.

General column (modifiable)

Select to insert a general column that accepts data as text only. Calculations will not work if entered straight into general cells.

The contents of general cells (modifiable) can have information input into them by a user in the Form Mode.

Numeric cell

If selected, each cell in the new column contains a numeric CaseView cell. Numeric cells in a table function the same way as numeric CaseView cells except that they are numbered using the table Id as a prefix.

Column width alphanumeric cell

If selected, each cell in the new column contains an alphabetic CaseView cell of fixed width. Alphabetic cells in a table function the same way as alphabetic CaseView cells except that they are numbered using the table Id as a prefix.

Variable width alphanumeric cell

If selected, each cell in the new column contains an alphabetic CaseView cell that expands as contents are input. Alphabetic cells in a table function the same way as alphabetic CaseView cells except that they are numbered using the table Id as a prefix.

You can insert more than one column at a time. Select the number of columns to insert.

  • There is no autofit to contents for tables in CaseView. If you add a column, you must resize the columns until all your data fits. If not, the type will go off the right margin. Basically, the only margin you can set is the left one. This is common to most word processors.
