Borders and Shading Tab - Table Properties Dialog

Use this command to add or modify table cell borders or shading. To access the Borders options, place the cursor somewhere in the table. If changes are to be made to a row or a column within the table, make sure the cursor is in that row or column before opening the table properties dialog. To modify a section of the table only, make sure to select the section, by dragging the mouse over it, before opening the table properties dialog.

In order for shading to work, each table cell must have the same before and after spacing otherwise white spaces appear.

Selection

If, prior to opening the Table Properties dialog, part of the table was selected by highlighting it, select this to apply the changes to that area.

View and apply borders in this area. When customizing border and shading formats, click on the intended location of the border in the Preview Image or use the border buttons to apply the selected settings. Clicking again will remove the border.

Changes to line style settings will not affect borders which have already been placed in the Preview pane unless the existing line is removed and reapplied. It is therefore possible to create and apply a thicker border for the top of a row and thinner border for the bottom without having to close and reopen the Table Properties dialog.

If selected, when the table breaks over a page, the final row of each page will use the border style applied to the final row of the table. If not selected, the style applied to the last row on the page will be used.

  • Whenever a carry-forward footer is used, its bottom border takes precedence over the property "Use bottom border on each page".
  • If you have merged table squares containing a border which span multiple pages, the border may not appear correctly in the print preview. For the borders to appear correctly, unmerge the squares, set the border again as desired, remerge the squares, and view again in print preview.
