About Issues

Issues are electronic review notes used to identify and resolve concerns in the client file. You can use issues to note problems in a document or specific line items and then have these issues assigned to staff members to investigate. Use issues to manage and track workloads in a client file.

How it Works

Use the extensive set of issue properties available from Working Papers to define detailed concerns in documents or the client file. As a supervisor or staff member in the client file, you can specify issue types, due dates, track progress, set reminders, clear issues, and more!

In Working Papers, you can associate issues with:

  • The entire client file
  • A specific document
  • A specific line item on a document

The issues in a client file can be applied to automatic documents, external documents (Word and Excel), and CaseView documents. For more information on Issues and CaseView, see the CaseView help.

Staff Assignments

Additionally, you can assign issues to users in the client file. Assign:

  • Specific staff members
  • Groups of staff members
  • Everyone

Staff members can then address these issues in the file. They can use the issue views to filter on issues assigned to them.

Issue Views

Issues for a particular document can be viewed quickly from the Document Manager and all issues can be viewed from the Issues Pane.

  • The Document Manager has a column that reports the number of issues associated for that particular document or a line item within that document.
  • The Issues Pane is a summary of all issues created in the file. Preset tabs are available in this pane that filter the issues by the most common methods (by date, by document, and so on). Managers and users alike can create custom tabs to sort issues in the most meaningful way to them.

Review on the Go

Review on the Go enables reviewers of a file to access documents, issues, and sign off roles from any remote location from a computer or laptop, tablet, or smartphone device. Integrate your SmartSync file with CaseWare Cloud to take advantage of this feature today! See more...

Other Considerations

Issues are compatible when performing other Working Papers operations such as Cleanup and Year End Close. You can keep certain issues when performing Retain on Cleanup and Roll Forward.

For additional information, see

When you use the Check Out feature you can still update issues.

Referencing an Existing Issue

You can also attach an existing issue to a line in the Working Trial Balance document. To create a reference to an existing issue, click the dropdown on the New Line Issue button on the Annotation toolbar. Select the issue you want to attach to the line. You can sort the list of issues by clicking on the column heading that you want to sort by.

Printing and Print Previewing Line Issues

The Print and Print Preview functions display line issues at the end of a report and reference to the line by the issue number. Issues without a number are referenced with “ISSUE1”, with the number portion increasing for each issue.

Copy Components

Use this command to copy Issues, Issue Views and Issue Types from a source file into a destination files.

The Copy Components Wizard can be accessed by selecting Copy Components on the backstage.

The following behaviors are available:

An item not already in the destination file will be added to the destination file.

An item existing in both source and destination files will overwrite the item in the destination file.

All views or types in the destination file will be removed and replaced with those from the source file.

An issue existing in both source and destination files will overwrite the issue in the destination file only when the issue in the source file has been changed more recently.
