Project Management Overview

Project Management in Time can help reduce and simplify the administrative tasks of preparing, processing and assigning client-related work across your firm. You can realize the following benefits when organizing your client work using project management:

  • Project Templates - templates serve as a draft for the types of services offered by your firm (for example, audit or tax). Use Project Templates to outline the common areas of each service, such as budgets, deadlines, issues, staffs, clients and roll-forward. Templates form a guideline for client projects; all details defined in the project template are inherited by its client projects.
  • Client Projects - client projects are derived from project templates. When you create a client project all details specified in the template are automatically applied to the client project - saving you time. The client project is fully customizable and you can override any template defaults if they do not apply for that specific client.

Defining the proper set of project templates establishes a good foundation for projects and practice management. Ensuring templates follow a model that is consistent and suited to your firm enables you to easily leverage many of the features and commands available from Time. For examples of templates, see here.

After you have set up projects, you can reference specific client projects for other areas in Time:

  • Time and Expense - when entering transactions for a client you can reference the project associated to that client. When billing, time and expense entries can be sorted and billed by project.
  • Billings from WIP - when generating invoices you can include a selective list or all project related time and expense entries for your clients.

Referencing projects in this way can clarify time and expense entries for staff and enable you to easily organize and simplify client deliverables. Furthermore, you can improve analytics by customizing Time's predefined documents when using project formats or specifying project filter criteria to suit your needs:

  • Analysis (for example, WIP, Budget, Billing or Time) - generate project specific reports or client reports with project details.
  • Project Templates - generate reports based on various template fields.
  • Projects - generate project monitoring reports based on various project attributes.

For a full list of document types, see here.

If you are using Protection with Time, an administrator can grant permissions to project related areas such as setup, documents and filtering. Granting permissions to only certain users or groups ensures only a limited number of users can create, edit, delete or view project related files and areas. See Setup: Projects, Documents: By Project and Filtering: Client Project lists here.
