Custom Properties

Use this dialog to view and manage custom properties. Custom properties can be used to categorize information in ways that Working Papers has not anticipated. They are meant to resolve the scenario where a user knows some information should be classified a certain way and other information should not, but CaseView is not aware of the user's intentions. A custom property can be as straightforward as an alphanumeric text value, or it can be a calculated value making use of the full range of CaseView's calculation functionality. Custom properties can even reference other cells in the document to make use of their values in calculations.

Custom Properties

Lists any existing custom properties. The Value column shows the property's value. In the case of a calculated custom property, click on the value and hover the mouse over the calculation to see the resulting value.

Add

Click this button to create a new custom property. Custom properties can be text or calculated properties. Type the name in the Custom Property dialog that appears and click OK. An exact duplicate name is not permitted and CaseView will present a warning should the given name already exist.

The cursor returns to the Value column beside the new property name. Enter a value and click elsewhere in the dialog to set the value.

An icon is displayed next to the property to indicated if it is a calculated property (plus sign) or text (the letter a).

An asterisk is displayed in the right hand column for custom properties that are available for all of the cells in the selected cell group.

Notes

  • Property names cannot be longer than 50 characters.
  • Property names are case sensitive, allowing for the creation of property abc and ABC.
  • If the calculation in a calculated property contains an error, an alert will appear when the custom properties window is closed. The calculation can be adjusted as needed.
  • Custom properties can be set for paragraphs, a group of cells, as well as table rows and columns.
  • The icon in the Custom Properties dialog is set to gray when a custom property is not available on all objects selected.

Delete

Clicking this button will delete the selected custom property.
